Jahrhunderts
The Silesian Renaissance project of an imperial literature in German was conceived to serve the leader of the Protestant Union, Frederick V of the Palatinate, who was expected to become Emperor after having been elected King of Bohemia in 1619. After the Habsburg victory, the project finished up as a literature of opposition. This article shows how the literary school of Martin Opitz reacted to the antagonism between German national literature and the Habsburg Emperors, and how the poets tried to overcome it via strategies ranging from acerbic criticism to total submission.

German Barock tragedy is not only a literary production – as the historiographical myth of the Kunstdrama implies – that has nothing to do with the other dramatic forms and the scenic institutions of the time. This appears most clearly in the Hapsburg's cultural arena (Silesia included) in the last third of the 17th century, especially in places where theatre performances are linked with the major events that accompany the life of the state and dynasty. In Vienna the ludi caesarei of the Jesuits and the Italian opera seria of Venetian origin played at court were built on a fictional pattern that operated with known mythologems so that the tragic conflict transformed by the epidictic discourse dissolved into the festa teatrale.
In Lohenstein's Sophonisbe the historic tragedy and the different ways of expressing praise subsist together. It is thus necessary to ask if Lohenstein's text can be considered as a coherent one. The paper examines the dramatic structures (here the prolog, the Reyen (choirs) and the prophetic episodes) as well as the handling of historic time which the mantic vision confers a transcendent bearing.

Given its geographic proximity with Alsace and France, Further Austria was frequently the object of violent disputes between the Hapsburgs and the Bourbons. Above and beyond wars and sieges, the territory was the site of a form of symbolic warfare. The article examines the competing symbolism at work in festive ceremonies in Freiburg im Breisgau, the capital of Further Austria in the wake of the Thirty Years War. The princely festivities celebrated in this city, which was often besieged and occupied by France, clearly symbolize the striking diplomatic changes that characterized the relations between the two princely houses.

With the Jewess of Toledo, Franz Grillparzer sets his last play in a twofold tradition: that of the baroque drama (Calderón/Lope de Vega) and that of the classical tragedy (Schiller), through the dialectical intertwine of two themes: human desires and the reason of State, whose intricacy constitutes the tragic essence of the work; and beyond, the support of an elaborate psychological reflection upon the mechanisms of desire. This foreshadows a theme which will occupy a major place in the literature of the Fin-de-Siècle. The originality of this tragedy lies in the author's attachment to a dramatic aesthetics and an anthropological ideal, both characteristic of classicism of which he is the heir, together with his knowing that he lives and writes in a world that bears the trace of an irremediable gap between art and life.

Bauernfeld's personal commitment in favour of constitution and a responsible ministerial cabinet during the Vormärz can also be found after the abortive revolution of 1848, in his theatrical work, particularly in the fantastic fairy play Die Elfen-Constitution oder Sie verlangen's sich nicht. This work, unpublished in the author's life-time has for model Shakespeare's A midsummer Night's Dream – the action being transposed to the realm of elves.
His political satire concerning both the change of opinion of his comrade in arms Alexander Bach and the political set-back of the restoration exposes the introduction of a constitution in elf land as being nothing but mere illusion.
