-- This book covers the several-year-long history of exchange between the Russian Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Churches, concerning relations between the Christian churches and society in general. How could we fail to commit to memory how those conversations got underway in the 1990s, with Fr. Vsevolod Tchaplin, who is in charge of social issues in the Department for External Church Relations in the Moscow Patriarchate? In 1998 appeared a first echo of these discussions: 'Eglise et société. Un dialogue orthodoxe russe-catholique romain', under the joint direction of Jean-Yves Calvez and Anatole Krassikov - simultaneously published in French in Paris by Editions du Cerf, and in Russian in Moscow by the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Science. The 2006 publication benefits also from a prolongation of that exchange in 2002, with the aim of treating the economy. The Church of the Moscow Patriarchate had just published an important official document on this subject, entitled: 'Foundations for an Orthodox Conception of Society'. The text had been adopted by the Russian bishops attending a council of the hierarchy. So the idea was born of a new publication, by various contributors, treating the relationship between the Gospel and the economy. There is no shortage of topical issues in this domain, and they are dealt with in this multi-author work: the links between market and enterprise; the rapports between ownership and capital. The present book will be published first in French, with a Russian edition to follow. The contributors were directed by Jean-Yves Calvet, a Roman Catholic theologian and director of the Department of Public Ethics of the Centre Sèvres (Jesuit Faculty) in Paris and by Andrei Zoubov, a Russian Orthodox theologian and professor at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, each supplying a conclusion based on his own tradition.
