René Sternke: Klassikentwürfe als Visionen zur Krisenbewältigung

In order to for us to understand the motivation behind classical phenomena, three concepts of classicism are analyzed. Frederick II of Prussia proposes the vision of a German classicism in response to the absence of a German language and literature adequate to fulfill the needs of society. Karl August Böttiger invents Weimar classicism to offer a place of commemoration that offers the prospect of unification to a quarrelling Germany. In search of a unifying figure, he attributes the role of the great classic successively to Wieland, Schiller and Goethe. Deploring the cultural decline of the province, Carl Gustav Schleich establishes an analogy between Weimar classicism and the culture of Stettin during the period 1840-1860. From his point of view, Stettin classicism is characterized by an urban culture in harmony with the surrounding nature. The memory of the halcyon cultural past of the city as well as the admiration for the perfect – and threatened – harmony between Stettin and its paradisiac surroundings can be found with different emphases in the works of Ackerknecht, E. M. Forster and Elizabeth von Arnim. Confronted with the problems of a post-industrial and post-socialist city, today's Szczecin renews the memory of the classic Stettin to nourish the vision of a European floating garden. Each concept of classicism is a vision that proposes a resolution of a current crisis.

Rita Unfer Lukoschik: Die Götter Griechenlandes im Ottocento

The contribution explores translations of Schiller's The Gods of Greece in early nineteenth-century Italy, focusing on the various reinterpretations and accommodations to which his elegy was subjected. The different versions document not just the high opinion and wide dissemination of Schiller's lyric poetry in the ottocento. They are also key testaments to the role that Schiller's poetry played in poetological-aesthetic discussions surrounding the use of mythology, for both Classici and Romantici – that is, representatives of the two camps into which Italian intellectuals were split in the first half of the nineteenth century – were engaged in a fierce polemic around the use of mythology in Schiller's elegy. The study makes clear, on the one hand, that Schiller was accorded a significant role in the formation process of Italian national literature. On the other, and more particularly, it also became evident that because of the importance assigned to the power of poetry in the ottocento, Schiller's lyric poetry served as a medium for treating not just eminent aspects of « modern » literary theory and production, but above all a new anthropological model.

In her novel Corinne or Italy, Germaine de Staël focuses on relations between painting and literature at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Among the most striking examples that she takes, there is the famous portrait Phaedra and Hippolytus by David's pupil, Pierre Narcisse Guérin. When analysed in the light of the comparison between Phaedra by Racine and Euripides'one, written in French by A. W. Schlegel and published in 1807 in Paris by publisher Tourneisen, the opposition between French "high tragedy", prevailing since the 17th century, and the young German romantic school, is obvious. According to Schlegel, the superiority of ancient Hippolytus is clear. Furthermore, Euripides should no longer be regarded as the apex of the Attic triad but truly as the manifestation of a decline with heavy consequences.

This stance clearly diminishes Racine's importance. From the viewpoint of literary history, it leads to dismissing the French of the Great Century from the history of European drama to the benefit of Shakespeare and Calderón. Above all, it rejects the conception of tragedy held by French playwrights from Corneille to Voltaire in the name of a more recently introduced notion of “tragic”. Oblivious to generic categories, the latter is detrimental to a philosophical conception of human condition based on the unreconcilable conflict between necessity and individual freedom.
