140 - Tirumankai Alvar’s Five Shorter Works: Experiments in Literature

This book is a study of the five shorter works of Tirumankai Alvar, an eighth-century Tamil poet who had retired from a military career in South India to pursue his interest in literature. For each work, the book provides the original Tamil in metric feet, transliteration indicating word boundaries, and an English translation as true to the original Tamil as possible, with numerous notations on grammar and textual high-lights. The introduction treats the poet’s interest in developing his literary skills by emulating a variety of poetic devices, techniques, structures, and strategies of earlier Tamil texts. The material covers developments in Tamil prosody, a unique poetic scheme, and adaptation of several Tamil literary motifs. The book also includes an analytical glossary, as well as appendices highlighting the status of some Middle Tamil grammatical forms. The first appendix provides uninterrupted translations of the five works in an English style that attempts to approach the voice and tenor of the Alvar, while an appendix on prosody discusses a previously undocumented adaptation of a Tamil metrical unit.Ce livre est une étude des cinq œuvres brèves de Tirumankai Alvar, un poète tamoul du viiie siècle de tradition vishnouïte, qui s’est consacré à la littérature après avoir interrompu une carrière militaire en Inde du Sud. L’ouvrage contient, pour chacune de ces œuvres, l’original tamoul présenté suivant les règles de la métrique, une transcription indiquant la séparation des mots selon le sens, ainsi qu’une traduction anglaise s’efforçant d’être, autant que faire se peut, fidèle à l’original tamoul. Cette dernière est accompagnée de copieuses notes sur des questions grammaticales ou textuelles. L’introduction du volume étudie les tentatives de la part du poète de développer sa technique littéraire par l’adaptation d’un grand nombre de procédés poétiques, de techniques et de structures empruntés à la tradition tamoule antérieure. On s’intéresse notamment à la prosodie (un domaine encore fort peu étudié) et à l’adaptation de motifs littéraires tamouls. L’ouvrage se termine par un glossaire analytique complet, ainsi que par un certain nombre d’appendices traitant de formes grammaticales typiques du tamoul intermédiaire (Middle Tamil).
